Access Control Systems in Peterborough

Every lost key is a security problem you can’t see. Access control replaces keys with fobs, cards or codes, so when someone leaves the business or loses a fob, their access is cancelled in moments.

Proximity Reader Paxton

Fob, card and keypad access

As approved Paxton installers we fit everything from a single keypad on a back door to networked Paxton Net2 systems across offices, warehouses and multiple sites. You can see who went through which door and when, set access by shift or department, and make changes from a PC.

Car Park Barrier

One system for doors, gates and barriers

On warehouse and distribution sites around the A1(M), the same fob can open the staff door, the yard gate and the car park barrier. Shift patterns are easy to handle too, with access that only works at the times each person is due on site.

Automatic Gates in Peterborough

A good set of electric gates changes how a home feels. The drive becomes private, the children and the dog stay where they should, and nobody has to climb out of the car in the rain. But a powered gate is a heavy moving machine, so safety has to be designed in from day one.

Swing Gate

Swing gates

The traditional choice for most driveways. Swing gates can be driven by arms mounted on the posts or by motors hidden underground beneath the hinges. They need clear space behind them to open into, and a drive that rises from the road affects which way they can swing.

Sliding gate

Sliding gates

Ideal when space is limited or the drive slopes. A sliding gate runs along the boundary, either on a ground track or on a cantilever frame that keeps the opening clear. It is also the sensible choice for wide entrances and most commercial sites.

Intercom

Opening options

Fobs are standard. Keypads, proximity tags, video intercoms and phone apps are all available too, so you can let a delivery driver in while you are at work or give a regular visitor their own code.

Barriers and Bollards in Peterborough

With so much warehousing and distribution around Peterborough, commercial gates here tend to work hard. We design entrances for lorries as well as cars, with the right gate speed, the right safety devices and controls that suit shift patterns and visitor traffic.

Car park barriers

Rising arm barriers are the most cost effective way to control a car park, staff entrance or shared yard. They can be linked to fobs, keypads, intercoms or an access control system you already have, and set to open quickly where queues build at shift change.

Bollards

Fixed bollards protect shopfronts, building entrances and equipment from vehicles. Removable and telescopic bollards suit private bays, while automatic rising bollards let approved vehicles through and keep everyone else out.

Automatic Doors in Peterborough

Automatic sliding and swing doors make life easier for customers, patients and staff, especially anyone with a pushchair, a wheelchair or their hands full. We install them for shops, surgeries, offices and public buildings around Peterborough, and we can often automate a suitable existing door instead of replacing it.

Door Entry Systems in Peterborough

Peterborough has seen plenty of new apartment blocks and conversions, and a reliable entry panel is what keeps those buildings secure. We install audio and video intercoms from Videx, BPT, Bell and Urmet for flats, offices and gated homes, including systems residents can answer on their phone.

Access Control and Gates for Peterborough Schools

Peterborough has added a lot of new homes in recent years, and new schools have opened alongside them. Whether it is a brand new primary on one of the growing estates or an older secondary that needs bringing up to date, we install the door entry, access control, CCTV and alarms schools rely on.

Multi academy trusts are a good fit for networked systems. One system can manage fobs and door permissions for staff who move between sites, while each school keeps control of its own reception. Visitors come through a video entry panel and sign in at the office, which is exactly what the Department for Education’s school security guidance asks for.

New school sites around Peterborough are often built beside busy estate roads, and older ones are squeezed for space at the gate. We design entrances that keep pupils on foot away from vehicles, usually with a dedicated pedestrian gate and a separate sliding or swing gate for cars, deliveries and coaches.

Lockdown is the other big question. Martyn’s Law will require schools expecting 200 or more people on site at once to have evacuation, invacuation, lockdown and communication procedures, with the duties starting no earlier than April 2027. We can help you get the hardware side ready well before then.

  • Door entry with release from reception
  • Staff fobs, cancelled the day someone leaves
  • Controlled doors locked down from a single point
  • Separate pedestrian gates, away from vehicle routes
  • Safety edges, photocells and force testing as standard

Gate safety and the standards we follow

This is the part we take most seriously. Powered gates and barriers in the UK come under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008. The recognised safety standard is BS EN 12453, and the DHF TS 011 code of practice sets out how gates and barriers should be designed, installed and maintained so the risk to people is as low as reasonably practicable.

So every job starts with a risk assessment. We fit safety edges and photocells that stop and reverse the gate before it can trap anyone, then force test it with calibrated equipment to confirm it stays within safe limits. You receive the paperwork at handover.

Older electric gates are often missing safety edges or photocells altogether. If yours are, get them checked. We can survey existing gates in Peterborough and bring them up to the current standard.

  1. Risk assessment for every installation
  2. Safety edges and photocells that stop and reverse the gate
  3. Force testing with calibrated equipment
  4. Safety documentation at handover

Do electric gates need planning permission in Peterborough?

Sometimes. Under permitted development rules in England, a new gate next to a road used by vehicles, or the pavement beside it, can be up to one metre high without planning permission. Elsewhere the limit is two metres. A like for like replacement that is no taller than the old gate is generally fine. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas can bring extra controls.

Peterborough has conservation areas in the city centre and in a number of the surrounding villages, so check with Peterborough City Council before ordering tall gates for a front boundary. We are happy to talk you through what is likely to be needed.

Access control and gate repairs in Peterborough

Gates, barriers and door hardware wear like any other machine. Motors weaken, hinges drop, photocells get knocked out of line and readers take a beating on busy doors. Regular servicing keeps them safe and reliable, and it costs a lot less than an emergency call out when a busy entrance stops working. We repair and service most major brands, including systems we did not fit.

Alarms and CCTV from the same team

Because we also install burglar alarms and CCTV, your gates and doors can be part of one system, with a camera on the entrance so you know who is there before you open up.

From survey to handover

It starts with a site visit to measure up, check the ground, the slope and the power supply, and talk about how you want the gate to work. You get a written quote, with drawings where they help. Groundwork, posts and cabling come first, then the gate, motors and safety devices. Before we leave, everything is tested, you are shown how to use it and how to release it by hand in a power cut, and the safety documents are handed over.

Access control in Peterborough: your questions answered

How much does access control cost in Peterborough?

That depends on how many doors you want to control, the locks they need and whether a standalone keypad will do or you want a networked system you manage from a PC. We give a fixed written quote after a site visit.

Can I manage door access from my phone?

Yes, with the right system. Many access control and door entry systems now let you open doors, see who came and went, and add or remove users through an app.

Can one access control system cover several schools in a trust?

Yes. A networked access control system can manage staff fobs and door permissions across several sites, so someone who works at two schools carries one fob, and a leaver can be removed from every site at once.

How much do electric gates cost in Peterborough?

It depends on the size and material of the gate, whether it swings or slides, the motors, the groundwork and how you want to open it. Automating gates you already have costs far less than a new sliding gate on a fresh concrete base. We quote after a site visit, and the price we give is the price you pay.

Can my existing gates be automated?

Usually. If the gates, posts and hinges are sound, we can fit motors and safety devices to them. Heavy timber gates or gates that have dropped on their hinges may need work first, and we will be honest if new gates would make more sense.

What happens to electric gates in a power cut?

Every gate we fit has a manual release so you are never trapped in or out, and we show you how it works at handover. Battery backup can be added to keep many systems running for a time without mains power.

Do you fit gates and barriers for warehouses and distribution sites?

Yes. We design and install sliding gates, barriers and bollards for commercial and industrial sites, sized for HGV access and controlled by fobs, intercoms or your existing access control.

Can school gates open automatically at set times?

Yes. Most gate controllers can run a timetable, opening for drop off and pick up and locking again during the day. Outside those times, visitors use the intercom and are let in from reception.
