Derby Access Control
We design, install and repair access control, door entry systems, automatic gates, barriers and automatic doors across Derby and South Derbyshire. As approved Paxton installers with over 20 years in the trade, we handle everything from a keypad on a single door to a gated yard and a networked system across several buildings.
Access Control Systems in Derby
Keys are a weak point for any business. They get copied, lent out and never handed back when staff leave. Access control gives each person a fob, card or code instead, and cancelling one takes seconds.

Fob, card and keypad access
We fit everything from a single keypad on a back door to Paxton Net2 systems covering whole offices and factory sites. You can see who used which door and when, set access by shift or department, and change permissions from a PC.

One system for doors, gates and barriers
On engineering and logistics sites around Pride Park and Raynesway, the same fob can open the staff door, the yard gate and the car park barrier. Add a new starter once and every reader on the site knows about them.

Automatic Gates in Derby
Electric gates keep cars in, stop people wandering up the drive and make arriving home in the rain far less of a hassle. Getting the design and installation right matters, though, because a heavy gate moving under power can seriously hurt someone if it is not set up properly.

Swing gates
The classic driveway choice, with post mounted arms or hidden underground motors. A drive that slopes up from the road affects which way they can open.

Sliding gates
Tracked or cantilevered, and our usual pick for wide openings and busy commercial entrances.

Ways to open your gates
Fobs, keypads, proximity tags, video intercoms and phone apps, matched to how the gate gets used day to day.
Barriers and Bollards in Derby
On business sites the priorities change. Traffic flow, durability and control over who gets in matter more than looks.
Car park barriers
The most cost effective way to control a car park or site entrance, operated by fobs, keypads, intercoms or your existing access control.
Bollards
Fixed, removable, telescopic and automatic rising bollards to protect buildings, shopfronts and parking spaces.

Automatic Doors in Derby
Automatic sliding and swing doors for shops, surgeries, offices and public buildings around Derby. They make life easier for anyone with a pushchair, a wheelchair or their hands full, and a suitable existing door can often be automated rather than replaced.
Door Entry Systems in Derby
For flats, offices and gated homes, a door entry system lets you see and speak to visitors before you let them in. We install audio and video intercoms from Videx, BPT, Bell and Urmet, including systems residents can answer on their phone. With a large student population around the University of Derby, landlords and managing agents rely on dependable entry panels to keep shared buildings secure.

Access Control and Gates for Derby Schools
Schools are a big part of our work. Most school security starts at reception, and the Department for Education’s school security guidance says visitors should sign in at the office rather than wander the site. A video door entry panel with release from reception makes that easy, while staff carry fobs that can be cancelled the day someone leaves.
At the gate, we keep pupils on foot well away from vehicles, with a separate pedestrian gate beside the vehicle gate and opening times set around drop off and pick up.
Martyn’s Law will add to that. Under the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025, schools where 200 or more people can be expected on site at the same time will need procedures for evacuation, invacuation, lockdown and communication, and those duties will not start before April 2027. A networked access control system that can lock controlled doors from one point makes a lockdown plan far easier to carry out.
- Door entry with release from reception
- Staff fobs, cancelled the day someone leaves
- Controlled doors locked down from a single point
- Separate pedestrian gates, away from vehicle routes
- Safety edges, photocells and force testing as standard

Gate safety and the standards we work to
This is the part that matters most, and it is the part cheaper installers sometimes skip. Powered gates and barriers fall under the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, the recognised safety standard is BS EN 12453, and the DHF TS 011 code of practice sets out how they should be designed, installed and maintained.
Already have electric gates without safety edges or photocells? Please get them checked. We can bring existing gates up to the current standard.
- Risk assessment for every installation
- Safety edges and photocells that stop and reverse the gate
- Force testing with calibrated equipment
- Safety documentation at handover
Do electric gates need planning permission in Derby?
Often not, but height and position decide it. Next to a road used by vehicles, including the pavement, a new gate can be up to one metre high without planning permission. Anywhere else the limit is two metres. Listed buildings and some conservation areas are treated differently.
Most front driveway gates are taller than a metre, so check with Derby City Council before you commit.
Access control and gate repairs in Derby
Gates and doors are machines, and machines wear. Motors tire, hinges drop, photocells get knocked out of line and readers take a battering on busy doors. A regular service costs far less than an emergency call out, and we repair most major brands, including systems we did not fit.
Alarms and CCTV from the same team
We also fit burglar alarms and CCTV across Derby, so a camera can watch the gate while the alarm looks after the building, all designed together and maintained by one company.
Areas we cover around Derby
We fit access control, door entry and gates across Derby, from Allestree, Darley Abbey and Duffield Road to Mickleover, Littleover and Chellaston, and on commercial sites around Pride Park, Raynesway and Derby Commercial Park.
Further out, we cover Belper, Ripley, Ilkeston, Long Eaton and the villages in between.

What our customers say
Access control in Derby: your questions answered
How much does access control cost in Derby?
It depends on the number of doors, the locks they need and whether you want a standalone keypad or a networked system you manage from a PC. We give a fixed written quote after a site visit.
Can I manage door access from my phone?
Yes, with the right system. Many access control and door entry systems let you open doors, see who came and went, and add or remove users through an app.
How much do electric gates cost in Derby?
It depends on size, material, swing or slide, motor type, groundwork and how you want to open them. We quote after a site visit so the figure you get is the figure you pay.
Can you automate my existing gates?
Often, yes. If the gates, posts and hinges are in good condition we can usually add motors and safety devices. Very heavy timber gates or ones that have dropped may need repair first, and we will tell you honestly if replacing them makes more sense.
What happens to electric gates in a power cut?
Every system we install can be released by hand, so you are never locked in or out, and we show you how at handover. Battery backup can also be added.
Do you install door entry for student lets and flats?
Yes. We fit audio and video door entry panels for blocks of flats and shared houses across Derby, and we repair and upgrade older systems that other companies installed.
Are automatic gates safe at a school?
Yes, when they are designed and installed properly. We always recommend a separate pedestrian gate, and every system has safety edges, photocells and force testing to BS EN 12453 before handover.
